December 14, 2023
Education Finance Network event

On December 14, 2023, the Education Finance Network hosted a virtual event on Education for Climate Action, providing an opportunity for its members to learn and discuss how they can apply their work as non-state actors in education to contribute to climate change mitigation, adaptation, and transformation.

The following is a summary of the discussion:

USAID’s Climate-Resilient Education Technical Guidance highlights the urgent need to integrate climate considerations into education, recognizing the bidirectional relationship between climate change and education. It outlines how climate impacts education systems and how education can enhance climate resilience and pro-environmental behavior. The guidance provides a seven-step approach across three phases for designing climate-resilient programs, emphasizing contextual analysis, risk identification, and evidence generation through monitoring and evaluation.

VVOB – education for development‘s “Keep It Cool” project in South Africa exemplifies this approach by incorporating climate education into classrooms and professional development for teachers, leading to systemic changes in the national curriculum.

The Education Outcomes Fund (EOF) focuses on promoting green skills within the workforce and transitioning workers from high-emitting sectors, aligning with USAID’s guidance. The EOF’s Just Transition Fund aims to build green skills and support climate resilience for smallholder farmers.

Reflections from COP28 highlight the need for systemic integration of education in climate action and increased attention to education’s role in addressing climate crises.
